Disappointment

I FOUND my footsteps turned today From chosen goal of glad intent, And, disappointed, would not smile When otherwheres my feet were sent.
But had I gone my chosen way, This meeting, friend, with you were lost. God knew it well—and let me pay The lesser disappointment’s cost.
He granted more than I had asked; And yet—I flung away my smile, And summoned not a braver one To wait his will a little while.
