The Pope and the War

WHILE all the warring nations have made their appeal to the Almighty for success to their arms and assistance in what they call their own righteous cause, the Pope has forbidden the offering of prayers for any of the countries at war. He has forbidden “all representatives of the church in belligerent countries, under pain of excommunication, from offering prayers for victory, from asking blessings for the combatants, or even administering the sacraments to those responsible for a continuation of the war.”
