The Sabbath.

SERENE and beautiful the setting sun Sinks in the western sky this Sabbath eve, Marking distinct the time when we should turn From toils of earth in holiness to live.
Yet few suspect the sacred hours are near, Which God once blessed and still counts holy time, Neglected and forgotten every where, By men of every shade, in every clime.
Though many claim the precept to obey, They tread a crooked path at every step. Their foolish heart hath found another day, And not an hour of sacred time they keep.
O vile, rebellious, stubborn heart of man! What God hath not commanded, free to do.— Yet Christ declares such worship is but vain, Where man's commandments make God's law untrue.
The great Creator blessed the Sabbath day, And all who do its righteous claims fulfill, And keep the Sabbath in a sacred way, Will find the blessing resting on it still.
For all who do his precepts 'tis foretold, And those who keep the Sabbath and are sealed, The Golden City will its gates unfold, The tree of life its generous fruits will yield.
No curse shall rest upon the earth made new, And God shall cause to cease the flow of tears, While glad assemblies pay him tribute due, And keep the Sabbath through eternal years.
