The Sunday Question.

A SERIES of discourses in behalf of Sunday observance is now in course of delivery at Detroit. In the second discourse of the series, Rev. Dr. Hogarth cites the decision of Judge Allen, of New York, “that the Sabbath [Sunday] is a civil institution, so made and constituted by the common law of the land, and as such its regulation is within the province of the Legislature. He even went so far as to hold that the government had power to designate what day should be observed as a Sabbath.”
REMARKS. This is very significant language, certainly. Here is what lies before us. This one-day-in-seven theory answers very well to dispose of the actual seventh day. But when we come to Sunday-keeping then we must have the law of the land fix that as the day, and compel all men to observe it.
