The Heart-Beat of a City

EACH day the living tide throbs in and out — A rush of human atoms to and fro; Some carry healing,— health and hope and truth,— And some a secret poison, as they go. Some feed the hungry veins through which they pour, And unto life bring new life — flame to flame; While others, ruled by wolfish passions, rend The very heart whence their own being came. In love and hate these fluent atoms strive, Flung back and forth by Time’s insistent breath; For weal or woe the fitful torrent runs,— The blood that gives the city life — or death! — Herbert N. Casson.
