A Change in Bible References

A CHANGE.—With this number we change from the use of letters to figures, in designating the chapters of the Bible. We also change from the use of a comma (,) between chapter and verse to a colon (:). In other respects we make no change. To illustrate the difference, we give examples of each method: Our former method, Ps. cxxxviii, 6, 8; cxxxix, 1–5, 23, 24. The same texts by our present method, Ps. 138: 6, 8; 139: 1–5, 23, 24.
The former plan was better than the present, in that it made the distinction between the chapter and verse more obvious. But there is no need of confounding chapter and verse in the present plan; and as it requires much less space in the Review, and much less labor to those who write, and as there is less liability to mistakes by the compositor, it is thought best to make the change.
