THE CLOSE OF THE YEAR.—

Another eventful year is just closing. It has been marked by many occurrences of deep interest. Earthquakes, pestilences, conflagrations, volcanic eruptions, accidents, crimes and calamities, have all made their mark in its record. And while men's crimes and God's judgments have distinguished the year, we must not overlook his long-suffering and forbearance and mercy in sparing so many while still going on in sin. But the year is now closing, and its record of neglected duties and of sins committed, is about closed for the judgment. And how solemn is the thought that we are one year nearer that grand event. No doubt a few years at most will close our probation. What use shall we make of the year to come? To many who read these words, it will be the last year of life. If the past has been mis-spent, shall the future also be wasted thus? Who of us will use this year for Christ and the truth? Who of us at its close will be able to say that we have led one soul to Christ during the year which will then be expiring?
