Severe Storms Across the Country
THERE appears to be a prevalence of tornadoes this season. During a recent storm in Nebraska a train on the Fremont and Blair railroad was lifted from the track and blown twenty feet from the rails. An infant was killed, the mail agent fatally wounded, and fifteen other persons fatally injured. A terrible storm of wind and rain passed over Moundsville, twelve miles below Wheeling W. Va., on the 6th inst. The blockade around the West Virginia Penitentiary was blown down, houses were unroofed, fences demolished, and great quantities of grain destroyed. On the 9th inst. the most violent storm experienced for years in that section passed over Syracuse, N. Y. Houses were struck by lightning and burned; several buildings were blown down and others unroofed, among them a school-house; one man was killed by lightning; immense hail-stones greatly damaged the growing crops in the surrounding towns; and large trees were uprooted. On the same day a furious storm visited the vicinity of Dayton, Ohio. Eight persons were killed and twenty injured. One church was demolished and another unroofed; a bridge across the Miami River was destroyed; the Ohio State Lunatic Asylum was unroofed; and a railroad depot and fifty other houses severely damaged.
