TEMPERANCE AND GOSPEL SONGS.
By J. H. W.
THIS is the title of a song book of 100 pages, of the usual size and style of Sunday-school publications, compiled by J. E. White, and published by the American Health and Temperance Association, Battle Creek, Mich. Price, 30 cents; $25 per hundred. This book will bear praising. Its words as well as music are mostly new, and all such as will bear repeating. Almost all the composers in this country of any note are its contributors. D. S. Hakes, Dr. W. O. Perkins, H. S. Perkins, Wm. F. Sherwin, W. A. Ogden, T. C. O'Kane, J. A. Butterfield, Dr. J. B. Herbert, W. T. Giffe, Elisha A. Hoffman, Frank M. Davis, W. J. Bostwick, L. B. Jewell, and R. B. Mahaffey, have furnished original music. And some of them are certainly very superior pieces. A large number of writers have also furnished original words, prominent among them, F. E. Belden, who is so well known to those who have used the Song Anchor. We are not alone in the opinion that a better collection of temperance songs has never been published. It is suited to the congregation or the parlor, with some stirring pieces suited to a select company of performers. We would like to specify some of the choice pieces, but are unable to determine which should have such a preference. Buy it, sing it, and you will never regret it.
