The Seriousness of Answered Prayer

ONE reason we do not pray better, I suppose, is that we are afraid of being answered. It is a very serious thing to pray, because we may be taken at our word. We must consent that God should order the answer. For instance, I pray in the morning that God will make me very useful to-day; it is a hazardous prayer. I may be taken at my word. Within an hour I may be called to very great usefulness, which will take a hundred dollars from my bank-account. Now, if I don’t want to take that money if it is called for, I have made a mistake in my prayer. Let us say what we mean.—Alexander McKenzie.
