Press dispatches relating to the observance of “Good Friday” make note of the extent to which the leading Protestant bodies are following the example of Rome in this respect. The celebration of this papal day now seems to have become general in the Protestant churches. The New York Sun makes this mention of the deference paid to the day in New York City:—
Good Friday was generally observed about the city yesterday. All of the exchanges were closed, but the banks were open, as were the courts, the day not being a legal holiday in this State. Many business houses, however, were closed. There were services in most of the churches, some continuing through the most part of the day, and in some instances in the evening. The Passion service in the Episcopal churches was held from noon till three o’clock.
