Missionaries and the French-Chinese Treaty

A Catholic priest, who was employed as an interpreter, fraudulently introduced into the treaty between France and China a clause permitting French missionaries to buy land in China, and the Chinese government did not discover his forgery until too late. We are very sorry that Protestant missionaries availed themselves of this Catholic duplicity to buy land, claiming the right under the most favored nation clause in the treaties.—Western Recorder.
