United States Newspaper Directory of 1776

Messrs. Geo. P. Rowell & Co., of New York, have published a United States Newspaper Directory of 1776. It is an inch and a half long and an inch and a quarter wide, and contains sixteen pages, upon which are given the names and descriptions of all newspapers in the United American colonies at the commencement of the revolutionary war. Boston had five newspapers, all weekly, and the largest was printed upon a sheet 10 inches by 16 in size, and the only newspapers outside of Boston in the State were two diminutive sheets, one published in Salem and the other in Newburyport. In nothing is the wonderful progress of the century more manifest than in the multiplication of newspapers, the improvement in their quality, and the marvelous perfection of the machinery for their production and distribution with the help of lightning and steam.—Sel.
