“If you send one person, only one, happily through each day,” quotes Sydney Smith, “in forty years, you have made 14,600 beings happy, at least for a time.” It was this same Smith who, though quite sick at one time, wrote the following to a friend: “I have gout, asthma, and seven other maladies, but am otherwise very well.”
