The Ku Klux in South Carolina.
COLUMBIA, S. C., Oct. 21.—Information has been received here from York and the adjoining counties of Spartanburg and Chester, stating that there is great excitement there owing to the summary proceeding of the United States Marshal and troops. Forty-four citizens have been arrested and crammed in jail, which is already full of Negroes. Several hundred citizens have deserted their homes in consequence of the wholesale arrests and sought refuge in the woods until an opportunity presents itself to seek safety in more distant flight. A reign of terror exists in that entire section, and depredations are being committed on the property of citizens who have fled, by Negroes and other evil disposed persons. A fight is said to have taken place on Broad River, between a band of Ku Klux and United States troops, and the conflict was so severe that reinforcements have been called for. WASHINGTON, Oct. 21.—Advices received here from South Carolina state that at Spartanburg, on Wednesday evening last, a band of Ku Klux consisting of the chief and 27 members surrendered to United States Marshal Johnson with their arms and disguises. Up to Friday morning 70 arrests had been made in the vicinity of that town alone. Spartanburg is known to be the headquarters for that Congressional district. Arrests have been made at other counties, but the number is not known here. Attorney General Ackerman is still with Col. Merrill. A number of well-known citizens are missing, including Mr. Lyle, member of the legislature, who is reported to be the chief of the Klan for that district. Among those who have disappeared are two or three clergymen known for their strong rebel proclivities. The officers of the law are proceeding steadily with their work, and before the arrests are made they will, it is affirmed, show the existence of a deep and wide conspiracy against the State, the laws, and all who sustain them. Most of the Ku Klux refugees are known to have gone to Georgia, where the order is quite strong. The Grand Cyclone for that state is believed to be the son-in-law of Robert Toombs.
