“Can ye not discern the signs of the times?”
A HORRIBLE epidemic has broken out in Kurdistan. Its symptoms closely resemble the plague. Tumors under the armpits, a characteristic of the London infection of 1665, purple stains on the skin, bloodshot eyes, and almost unexceptional fatality are the prominent signs.
THE report that Brigham Young, the Mormon prophet, has fled, and that he proposes to ask Congress to admit Utah as a State, on condition that polygamy shall be abandoned and the present suits against the Mormon leaders be stopped, if true, indicates the near downfall of the Mormon power. Brigham Young has vast wealth and large influence. He is able to command, and he has employed the very best attainable legal counsel. He would not be likely to fly if his counsel advised him that Judge McKean is wrong, and that it would be safe to stand his trial and appeal to the higher courts. His flight, if he has fled, is pretty clear proof that his lawyers advised him that there is no safety nor escape in any other course.
