Shall we Have War with Spain?
By Observer
It is said that a strong effort is actually made, at this moment, by parties of great influence, to involve the United States in war with Spain. The President and the Secretary of State are represented as unfavorable to the movement, but a clique of politicians, near the sources of power, think that they see in such a war the acquisition of Cuba and San Domingo. We know how powerless often is the opinion of sober-minded and quiet people, aloof from political agitations and strifes, but such a national dishonor as war with Spain would incur, ought to be a motive strong enough to rouse the sensitiveness of the most indifferent. If we wish to be regarded by the world as having entered on a career of war for conquest, assuming the role of freebooters, preying upon the weak, and submitting to the strong, we shall go to war with Spain and take Cuba. We pray God to put it out of the hearts of politicians to do such iniquity.—Observer.
