Calamities.

THE long list of calamities which have fallen on this country in recent years, is being extended by rapid and terrible additions. To the Louisiana floods, the Mill River disaster, the late Chicago fire, the devastation caused by grasshoppers in Minnesota, and the desolating drouth in Southern Kentucky, is now to be added the sudden and terrible inundation in Allegheny, by which an immense amount of property is destroyed and nearly two hundred lives have been swept away. These repeated judgments are solemn calls to individual repentance; they are stern rebukes of our national greed and impiety; they are warnings of heavier judgments to come, if the nation continues impenitent, and their increasing frequency and severity are among the signs in which faith and hope see promise that “the end draweth near.” Ministers of religion ought not to fail to use the fresh and vivid arguments which God is thus putting into their lips, or to teach the mighty lessons which these providences are designed to convey. —Christian Statesman.
