THE COTTON CHURCH.

Under this heading, the Denison (Texas) Daily Herald, of May 29, 1879, publishes the following generous and noble tribute from the citizens of Denison to the character of Eld. R. M. Kilgore, and his Christian labors in that place. While we know that Bro. Kilgore is laboring with a sincere desire to do men good, we are glad to know that he is finding many friends in Texas who appreciate his motives and recognize the character of his labors, though they may not agree with his arguments. We quote the article of the Herald, which reads as follows:—
At the meeting in the park last night, the following preamble and resolutions were adopted by the assemblage.
Fifty-three names were appended to the resolution. It is due to Elder Kilgore to state that these resolutions were drawn up and signed without any effort or knowledge of his:—
It is, unquestionably, the duty of Christians to uphold and support, under all circumstances, those who are laboring for the welfare of mankind; and to show in some appropriate manner their appreciation for such services, notwithstanding their religious faiths may not be in harmony.
We rely upon the axiom: “By their works (fruits) ye shall know them.” Therefore, be it Resolved, That in the person of Elder R. M. Kilgore we recognize an embodiment of the true gentleman, and an earnest and faithful Christian.
2. That our unfeigned thanks are tendered him for the fearless manner in which he has expounded his views of the Bible, and for the gentlemanly bearing he has maintained while in this place toward those who have seen fit to denounce his religious faith as a delusion and a fraud.
3. That, as Christians, our prayers shall go with him to every field of labor; as non-professors, we tender our best wishes and support; as fellow-citizens, we bid him God speed in all his efforts to arouse mankind to a more healthful reflection on the truths of the Bible.
