NEW YORK AND PENN. TENT, NO. 3.
By Chas. B. Reynolds
The interest at Clear Creek continued good to the end, despite rain and mud, and the hurry of haying and harvesting. At our last meeting, Tuesday, July 25, a terrific storm, with very heavy rain, kept the congregation in the tent till after midnight. There was “no going hence nor tarrying there;” for the tent leaked badly. It was a night long to be remembered. The next day we moved; it was muddy, sloppy, and disagreeable. Thursday, July 27, we commenced meetings in Ellington. The tent is pitched in a public park in the center of the village, about two miles from our former stand at Clear Creek. July 29, we held a Sabbath meeting at Bro. Watkins' house, near Clear Creek. About thirty were present. After a most encouraging meeting, I baptized four. Despite some discouragements, the work is steadily progressing. First-day, July 30, we attended a spiritualist meeting, held in the immediate vicinity of the tent. Our attendance, morning and afternoon, was large, although four churches held services within sound of our voice. In the evening, I spoke on the evidences of Christianity and gave an exposure of spiritualism before an immense gathering. Opposition is organized, fierce, persistent. Our trust is in the Lord. We were cheered and encouraged by a visit from Bro. R. F. Cottrell, who remained with us Sabbath and first-day. Chas. B. Reynolds.
