GO FORWARD.

“Speak unto the children of Israel that they go forward.” Ex. 14:15. Does the Red Sea sometimes rise before you, dear brother or sister, and faith see no possible passage through? God says, “Go forward!” Why not? Behind is certain death. There are no side issues. Go forward! Infinite love is speaking, omnipotent power. What though the way be dark, and the waves, rolling mountain high or unfathomably deep, seem to mock all further advance, we have not terrific waters to meet alone. One is guiding who not only sees every step of the way, but who can control everything to bring about his own purposes. Is he not worthy of our confidence? As we show our obedience by stepping resolutely onward, see the waters recede! Surely an unseen power is at work for us, bearing our burdens and carrying our sorrows.
Does Jordan roll between us and the promised land? Courage! Our great High Priest with the ark of God has passed on before, and opened a way for us. Let us follow closely. “The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge.” Courage, all! He who can control and dispose of the most overwhelming trials, can and will, just as lovingly open the way for us through all our every-day vexations, and lift us by degrees above our failures and wrongs. The mighty Hand we have to cling to is never weary of helping onward to goodness. “Go forward,” through sunshine and storm, up the mountain and into the valley, through the sea or through the fire. There is not a moment to lose—not one to spend in regrets that are unavailing. Trust in the blood of Jesus for pardon, and do it at once, as soon as the knowledge of sin comes;—then “go forward,” for time does not wait while we sit and grieve. Every moment brings its own work. Letus not pervert one, but “make the most we can of life.” With our fingers in our ears, like Bunyan’s pilgrim, now, if never before, let us hasten on, crying, “life! life! eternal life!” M. E. S.
