WORD from the Philippines, August 5, says:— At the suggestion of Archbishop Chappelle, Judge Taft has been examining the heads of the religious orders, as well as Mgr. Nozaleda and other ecclesiastics, preparatory to the time when it will be necessary to take definite action regarding the affairs of the friars and the church. It appears that the real-estate holdings of the friars are smaller than had been expected. And so Judge Taft is directed by the suggestions of Archbishop Chappelle, is he? And it was only to be expected that it would “appear that the real-estate holdings of the friars are much smaller than had been expected.”
