HORSE-RACING, “dancing on the green,” “sack-running,” a “wheelbarrow-race,” “cooking supper between heaven and earth,” etc., is the programme of the celebration of Independence day in this city. What a burlesque on the birthday of our nation. Little did the patriots of ’76 dream that their bloody struggles and heroic deaths would be commemorated with such hollow mockery, void of all intelligence and becoming respect.
