Diplomacy in Sending Troops to China
An item illustrating the aptitude of the United States officials in displaying the characteristic of diplomacy as defined in the Sermon department two weeks ago, is the following from a Washington dispatch to the New York Sun, June 25:— The military authorities continue to deny, in the face of orders for a brigade to go to Taku from the Philippines, that more troops have been directed to proceed to China. Coincident with these denials of the military officials is the statement of the Navy Department that Admiral Remey has been told to take as many troops on the “Brooklyn” as she can carry. The government is apparently using every endeavor to get re-enforcements into China as soon as possible, but for some reason it will not admit that fact. This is shown by the determination to send troops on the “Brooklyn.” The army transports “Logan” and “Port Arthur” are at Manila, ready to carry the Ninth Infantry to Taku.
