Intense Heat.

The weather during the past week has been uncommonly hot for this State. By comparing the records of previous years it was found that Monday was the hottest day known in San Francisco for twenty-seven years, the thermometer going as high as 99°. In Oakland the thermometer stood at 102° in the shade, while in many towns of the interior it ranged from 100° to 120°.
Last Tuesday there were six cases of sun-stroke in Santa Rosa, one in Petaluma which proved fatal the same day, and one in Vallejo. Our hottest summers are usually those which are preceded by dry winters, as the less snow there is deposited in the Sierras the greater the heat in the lower countries. There is said to be less snow upon the mountains now than at any corresponding time for many years. Hence Californians are anticipating a continuation of hot weather in the interior till late in the fall.
