“It is said that the late Prof. Sheppard, of Bangor Theological Seminary, was accustomed to tell his pupils when they were about to leave the institution, ‘Young men, preach the duties. Often recur to the tables of the law, and dwell upon Thou shalt, and Thou shalt not, lest you fill the churches with converted scoundrels.’ There is occasion for such advice, for the immutable divine law is less preached, and good works are more rarely inculcated from the pulpit than they should be. If there are the hopes of Calvary, there are also the terrors of Sinai; and if faith is a Christian duty, so believers must be ‘careful to maintain good works,’ for ‘faith without works is dead, being alone.’ A living faith produces holy living and holy doing.”
“Thus saith the Lord, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls.” Jer. 6 : 16.
