Pure Religion.

Pure religion, what a treasure, Richest boon from Heaven sent down; Only source of lasting pleasure To the fallen sons of men.
Though in chains of guilt we languish, Pressed beneath sin’s heavy load, It the power of sin can vanquish, And redeem our souls to God.
Lambs of Jesus in temptation, Faint and doubting, full of fear, It’s the only consolation Which your drooping hearts can cheer.
Bear its cross, possess its spirit, Keep its precepts with delight, It will make your paths most pleasant, And will guide your footsteps right.
Earthly bliss is but a bubble, Fame and wealth our hopes betray, Friendship’s balm is mixed with trouble, Youth and health must soon decay.
But religion, pure and lovely, Smooths with joy the thorny way, And unto the meek and holy, Points to crowns in endless day.
When by age or ills distressing, Panting in our latest breath, Hope of life, Oh, what a blessing! In the cold embrace of death.
