Comparative Weight of Gold and Silver.

Many people have a desire to know the value of gold and silver in bulk. The following statement, from Professor F. L. Thirmer, Superintendent of the branch mint of Denver, may be relied on as correct.
One ton (2,000 pounds avoirdupois) of gold and silver contains 26,163 troy ounces, and, therefore, the value of a ton of pure gold is $602,799.21, and a ton of silver, $37,704.48.
A cubic foot of pure gold weighs 1,518.75 pounds avoirdupois; a cubic foot of pure silver weighs 556.26 pounds avoirdupois.
If there is one per cent of gold or silver in a ton of ore, it contains 266.13 ounces troy of either of these metals.
The calculations at the Mint are made on the basis that 43 ounces of standard gold, or 800 fine (coin) is worth $800, and 11 ounces of silver, 900 fine (coin) is worth $12.80.
