Lakeside, Tulare Co., Cal.

I came to this place and commenced meetings, January 23. From the commencement there was manifested a desire to hear, some coming as far as eight miles to evening meetings. This interest continued until I came to the question of man's nature. About this time we had a small rain, followed by dark, foggy nights, which caused a great many to stay away, as it is difficult for one to find his way on these plains without something more than simply a road to follow. Then just as I got to the Sabbath question, a ditch excitement took about three-fourths of the men out of the neighborhood, consequently my congregations were small while canvassing that question.
I have given about thirty-five discourses. Twelve have taken a decided stand, and signed the covenant, while others are still investigating. The minds of the people in this vicinity are being stirred with these solemn truths; and the call from every direction is, “When can you come to our school-house to hold meetings?”
The people here are rather poor, having strained every nerve financially to get water. I have sold about eight dollars' worth of books, and obtained a few subscribers for the SIGNS OF THE TIMES. They will keep up their Sabbath meetings and Bible class and Sabbath-school. I feel that the Lord has blessed the effort made here, in answer to prayer. Let us still pray for the success of the work in this county. J. L. WOOD. March 12, 1877.
