Turkish Censor Objects to Macedonia

The Turkish censor, who recently objected to printed matter containing the chemical formula for water—H²O—on the ground that it might be taken to mean that Hamid II, the present Turkish ruler, is nothing, is again heard from, this time objecting to the word “Macedonia” in the English Bible, which he has discovered is found in Paul’s epistle to the Thessalonians. The censor suggests as an improvement that the words “the vilayets of Salonica and Monastir” be substituted for the word Macedonia. The American Bible Society declares that rather than make such an alteration it will cease circulating the Bible in Turkey.
