The Source of Life and Light

“He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life; and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.” John 3: 36. This scripture shows, as plainly as anything can be, that everlasting life is contingent on faith in the Son of God; for “he that believeth not the Son shall not see life” — so the text says. Therefore if the individual who believes not the Son shall not see life, man by nature does not possess immortality.
In harmony with the foregoing text is the following word from the first letter of John: “He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made Him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of His Son. And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.” 1 John 5: 10-12.
How plain these statements are! And how clearly do they tell us that God has given us eternal life in His Son, but that we must have the Son of God in order to have this life! If we have not accepted Him, we do not have life. The unscriptural doctrine of the immortality of the soul has caused many a person to make shipwreck through believing that after death he can live on apart from God and regardless of Him; but the foregoing scriptures most plainly show to the contrary.
