International Peace Congress
ARRANGEMENTS have been completed by strong men of international repute to hold an international peace congress in San Francisco, October 10 to 12, 1915. The purpose of this peace congress is declared to be “to bring together, as far as possible, representative leaders from all nations and from all organizations that favor world peace, in order to confer on the most practical plans for the putting into coöperative action those forces and agencies that will lead to the abolition of war.” The slogan of the congress is that “war must be destroyed.” “All peace societies; women's clubs and other organizations of women; all churches and religious societies; colleges and universities; labor unions; socialist societies; chambers of commerce and all other business men's organizations; and state and national governments” are invited to send delegates to this congress. Dr. David Starr Jordan, chancellor of Leland Stanford University; Benjamin Ide Wheeler, president of the University of California; Senator James D. Phelan; the Hon. James Rolph, mayor of San Francisco; Dr. Frederick Lynch, secretary of the Church Peace Union, founded by the two-million-dollar gift of Andrew Carnegie; and Arthur D. Call, secretary of the American Peace Society, Washington, D. C., are a few selected from the long list of well-known men who are sponsors for the congress and who are laboring to make it a success. Well directed efforts to create sentiment against war and in favor of peace are doubtless used by the Prince of peace in holding the winds of war in these times. But we must not make the mistake of reaching the conclusion, that conditions of peace will ever prevail, except it may be for a very brief time, throughout this wicked world. Armageddon cannot be far ahead.
