What means this desolation dire, This wreck by shot, by sword, by fire? What means the tramp of heavy feet? Ah, sounds of war our ears now greet; For men are rushing to the fray, And thousands perish every day, Yielding their homes, their lives, their all, Responding to the war god’s call; For death in earth and sky and sea Has set a thousand furies free, And mankind trembles in dismay, As onward comes the Judgment day.
