He Was Famished

WRITING of Christ's temptation in the desert, Matthew says, “He was afterward an hungred.” Other languages give this, “He was at last hungering.” In other words, while He was without food for forty days, at the end thereof He was at last famished. “An hungred” does not mean simply “hungry.” It is the past participle of the verb “to hunger.” This would more nearly resemble our word “famished” than simply “hungry.” J.
