We close the first epistle of John, and take up also the second and third epistles from the same apostle, and the epistle of Jude, and read four chapters in the Revelation.
The name of the book of Revelation in the Greek is “Apocalypse,” meaning a revelation, or disclosure. It is indeed a revelation of Jesus Christ as man's Sacrifice and Saviour, Priest, Captain, and everlasting King. It was written by the apostle John, somewhere about the close of the first century, and on the isle of Patmos, where he was banished by Roman cruelty. When the emperor Domitian shut John away from his kindred and friends on the bleak, lonely island, the apostle did not know that there would be opened to him more glorious visions than the world had yet seen, and revelations which would be of inspiration and strength and comfort to God's children until the Lord should come. Chapter 1 is the introduction; chapters 2 and 3 relate to a prophecy of the seven churches. There also come within our week's reading Ps. 119, verses 81-176, and Psalms 120, 121, 122.
