Evening Thoughts

By Howard W. Wilcox
WHILE ling’ring hues of evening’s waning light Are touching earth in soft and mellow lines, While stillness moves through Nature’s tired confines, To soothe her weary forms ere fall of night. The darkness humbly waits the fuller flight Of parting day, ere forth his orbs he shines, Like diamond’s sudden gleam in darkened mines, Lest choicer rays be lost in those more bright. This blend of day from bright to gentler skies In mystic ways begets a boon of peace. It satisfies, and nothing more is sought. But satisfaction reaps a sure surprise. The mind, in fond response to kind release From care, unveils its choicest gems of thought.
