ACQUAINTED WITH THE AUTHOR

A NOTED infidel was on a certain occasion in a literary circle, where persons of high scholarly attainments and international reputation were present. A lady noted because of her literary ability expressed a firm belief in the inspiration and teaching of the Holy Scriptures. The infidel turned to her, and with an air of astonishment said, “Do you believe the Bible?” “Most certainly I do,” was her reply. “Why do you believe it?” he queried. “Because I am acquainted with the Author,” was her noble and withering reply.
Indeed, this tells why men do not believe the word of God. They do not know God. He is a stranger to them. Though He is endeavoring to communicate with them through His word, they have closed their eyes, and stopped their ears, and refused to believe. Against the great things of His law which He has revealed to them they have arrayed their shallow dictums and pronounced it folly.
But once we know the Author, we recognize and receive with joy His word, which comes with light and hope to the soul. The words of Eliphaz the Temanite apply with great force here: “Acquaint now thyself with Him, and be at peace: thereby good shall come unto thee.” Job 22:21.
