“THE SALOON SHOWN UP,” by Prof. Thomas W. Shannon, A. M., author of the Shannon purity books. The S. A. Mullikin Company, Marietta, Ohio. 15 cents. Now that the great fall temperance campaign is past, there is likely to be too great a let down in the activities of the anti-alcohol armies. The booklet here named is one to liven interest in the question again, and give the needed impetus to an early start for the next campaign. Sixty pages of ringing prose cover the main arguments well, and leave the saloon “shown up,” without a supporter it would care to own in daylight.
“WHO’S WHO IN AMERICA.” A. N. Marquis & Co., 440-442 Dearborn Street, Chicago. 2,700 pages. 1914-1915 edition. Price $5.00.
This, one of the most valuable of the reference works published in the United States, has just come to hand. It aims to give a concise biography and furnish the address of all living citizens of the United States who are or are likely to become the subjects of national interest or inquiry on account of their eminence in particular fields, or on account of their official position in the government or in connection with the societies and institutions, religious, philanthropic, scientific, etc., that are most prominent in a national way. The present edition will be current until May, 1916, when, in the ordinary course, another will be published. Aside from its great usefulness to public and institutional libraries, there are doubtless many private libraries where this work can fill a place only second in importance to that of the dictionary. The present volume is the eighth biennial issue, and its place among this country’s literary institutions promises and deserves to be conspicuous and permanent.
