Crossing the Kidron

By S. J. Townsend
King David's soul was troubled. From the throne Of Judah, from Jerusalem, he fled, And as he went, sore weeping, did bemoan His kingdom's loss. Barefoot, with covered head, O'er the brook Kidron eastward then he sped, Fleeing the wrath of Absalom, his son; For to the king a messenger had said: “Lo, Absalom all Israel's hearts hath won. “He now in Hebron reigns, Thy kingdom is undone!”
“Father, the hour is come,” our Saviour spake. From the impenitent city of His care, He weeping turned, His sorrowing way to take O'er the brook Kidron to Gethsemane, there At last to plead in agony of despair: “O righteous Father, wilt Thou that I sup This wine of sorrow? May I not forbear?” With traitor's kiss was brought the bitter cup, And He on Calvary for sin was lifted up.
