“TAKE heed that no man deceive you.” The Lord repeatedly warned those who would be living in the last days, that they must beware of deceptions. He has told us that there would arise false christs and false teachers, and that they will be so cunning in their work that “if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect.” The Master has given us an infallible guide, and that guide is His word. He says: “He that entereth in by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. To him the porter openeth; and the sheep hear his voice: and he calleth his own sheep by name, and leadeth them out. And when he putteth forth his own sheep, he goeth before them, and the sheep follow him: for they know his voice. And a stranger will they not follow, but will flee from him: for they know not the voice of strangers.” John 10:2-5. And again He says: “And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear My voice; and there shall be one fold, and one Shepherd.” John 10:16. Christ’s sheep do not know the voice of the stranger, but they do know the voice of the true Shepherd. Therefore, we should not be so much interested in the study of the various false religions, but should devote our time to the study of the true. What we need is to know the voice of the true Shepherd. All other voices will sound strange, and we will disregard them. The Master tells us the plan by which He guides us. He says: “Howbeit when He, the Spirit of truth, is come, He will guide you into all truth: for He shall not speak of Himself; but whatsoever He shall hear, that shall He speak: and He will show you things to come. He shall glorify Me: for He shall receive of Mine, and shall show it unto you.” John 16:13, 14. This Spirit of truth, which is called the Comforter in this same connection, came in a mighty manner on the day of Pentecost. He has been with the church all through its history, and the Master has told us that He will guide us into all truth. He does not speak of Himself, but He guides us by the “sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.” Eph. 6:17. Then God’s Spirit has a sword, and that sword is His word. God’s Spirit guides into all truth, and He guides through the teaching of the Word itself. Therefore we do not need any key to the Scriptures, because God has given us a key to the person of His Holy Spirit, and each individual may have this personal Guide to the definite knowledge of truth. But the deceptions that are prepared are designed to be close imitators of the genuine, hence we need to be on our guard. We are to learn to know the voice of the true Shepherd, and we are to know that this voice is in His own word. Each individual may know this Word for himself. Christ becomes a personal acquaintance and a personal friend, and we learn to depend upon Him. The infinite power of the great God, our heavenly Father, has made definite arrangement that we through His word, and by the agency of His Spirit, may become personally acquainted with His Son, our Saviour. And He desires that we shall not become deceived, nor trust in any other key for the unlocking of His word than the one that He has given us in the person of His Spirit. And we should not forget that the Spirit He has promised to send will not speak of Himself. Any key that makes itself prominent, is not working under the direction of the Spirit of God. The text quoted plainly shows that.
