Italy and the Pope and Peace

THE Rome correspondent of the Western Watchman of January 28, referring to Pope Benedict's effort for peace, and the favor with which the nations of the world regard it, says:
“In the Italian nature there is still a large element of latent pride in the power and influence of the papacy. Rome to-day is justly proud of the new pope, whose influence has been exerted to mitigate some of the horrors of war. Many here believe that peace will ultimately come through his intervention. The cables of acquiescence from the rulers of the warring countries are reproduced in all the daily papers, even in the Messaggero, and favorably commented upon.”
