Relief for Nome and Solomon
By Editor
Last week we noted a disaster in Nome, Alaska, occasioned by a heavy storm which wrecked hundreds of buildings, and which was followed by a fire. Later despatches say that the storm that swept over Nome completely took the town of Solomon off the map. Not a building of any sort in the settlement, which had a population of 300, remained standing. This little village was about forty miles distant from Nome. Already supplies are being hastened to the relief of the distressed section. A vessel is on the way from Seattle loaded to its full capacity with various kinds of provisions. The news of the disaster had hardly reached San Francisco before they had despatched $2,500, and other funds were being raised. San Francisco remembers with gratitude the help that she received when passing through a similar experience. When our fellow citizens are in such distress, they need our assistance, and they need it promptly. Any bank in the country would receive funds for the relief of this distress and forward it to the proper authorities. The Red Cross Society, among other organizations, always receives funds for such purposes.
