Yuan Shih Kai’s Inauguration

We noted last week that on October 6 Yuan Shih Kai was elected president of the new Chinese republic. On October 7, Gen. Li Yuen Heng, the provisional vice-president, was duly elected as vice-president by the new Chinese congress. On October 10 Yuan Shih Kai was inducted into office, and delivered his inaugural address. It was discovered, during the progress of the inauguration, that the rebels had bribed the chief of the Peking mounted police to assassinate the new president. This officer was arrested, confessed the plot, and the bombs arranged for the infamous work were found on his premises.
