Immortality Through Scientific Research
It is reported that an eminent physician at the Rockefeller Institute of Medical Research has reached the remarkable conclusion “that the cells of which the human body is composed can live forever.” The claim is made further that— “His most recent experiments demonstrate, in brief, that human cells may be kept alive indefinitely if sustained in the proper medium and kept at the proper temperature.” And we have this additional great claim made in regard to man: “If his various vital organs are properly safeguarded, nourished, and renovated from time to time, there is no reason why man should not live forever. Physical immortality becomes now merely a matter of scientific vigilance.” It has been the dream of men for millenniums to discover some way by which they could conquer death and live forever without accepting the salvation that is offered through the Lord Jesus Christ. Hence it is not at all surprising that in this science-mad age, they are endeavoring to find some kind of scientific method by which physical man may be made immortal, independent of the salvation offered in the gospel. In fact, the men who are so enamored with their scientific theories in this particular field of research, are in large numbers among those who reject the Lord Jesus Christ altogether, or if they accept Him, their belief is only nominal, and subject to their dogmas of evolution. But over against these scientific dreams and these scientific theories stands the great decree of the Almighty given in the opening pages of His Book: “In the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.” The divine decree was ignored, man transgressed, and the history of this world, from beginning to end, has had to record that there is no exception to the rule, and that every individual of earth is doomed to die. Science will never be able to conquer the words of the Eternal. But for all those who are willing to accept immortality on the plan of the only One in the universe who can give it, there is that great promise that “God so loved the world, that He gave His only-begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not His Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through Him might be saved.” John 3: 16, 17.
