England to Protect Catholic Missions
The London correspondent of the Western Watchman (Roman Catholic), in the issue of that journal of July 31 says that the Catholic protectorate of missions, granted to Portugal by Pope Martin V, 1417-1431, and renewed in 1886, has been rejected by Portugal, and will probably be offered to England, “who will gladly accept it.” This, we are told, “will have far-reaching consequences. It may be the means of opening official relations between England and the Vatican, and of sending an English ambassador to Rome, while it will certainly assure to England one day the possession of Goa, Diu, and Daman, the last Portuguese possessions in Hindustan.” But will England do this?
