The Master's Query

By W. R. Patterson
A sheep is missing from the fold— I count them one by one; And over mountains bleak and cold, It wanders e'er alone. How sad the breeze-borne cries that come From canon dark and deep! Shepherd is there never a one, To seek My wand'ring sheep?
A tempest gathers in the sky, And thick the shadows fall, While sounds anon a plaintive cry, A sad and bitter call. Hast thou sought with tenderest care Each burdened soul of Mine, And hushed the sigh, and dried the tear, And made his sorrow thine?
Not with charms of sounding creed, Nor glittering show or boast: 'Tis more to feel the world's sad need— Enough to seek the lost. Out in the world's highways of sin, Wretched, hungry, and cold, My children cry. Go bring them in, There's room within My fold.
