Execution Day—for Which?

By Delwin Ross Buckner
His ear can catch the bugle's shrill, sharp note, Compelling everywhere men to awake To war, while he, condemned for conscience' sake, Stands with a noose coiled tightly round his throat, And black cap o'er his head, through which no note Of light can pierce, because he chose to break A law which antichrist presumed to make, Instead of that Jehovah's fingers wrote. But hark! A trump blast echoes through the sky, And prison walls—like those of Jericho— Fall flat while the brave Daniel of our time Escapes, whereas his base tormentors die, O'ertaken by God's two-edged beams which mow Down those who'd close earth's history with a crime.
