Attempted Assassination—

A few days ago, a large quantity of dynamite, with fuse and caps attached, was found within about sixty feet of Mayor Gaynor’s office in New York City. The fuse had been lighted, but through some defect had gone out. If the explosion had occurred, many other persons as well as the mayor might have been the victims. Things of this character are among the most reprehensible. Our newspapers are all the time cartooning and decrying our public men, and oftentimes with a showing of justice and fact on their side. But when a man is continually held up to ridicule and scorn, it is not surprising that some one feels it a duty to put him out of the way. The discussions of the time are producing an intensity of class hatred, and violence will be more and more pronounced as the result of it. The effect must always follow the cause.
