Anent Sunday Laws

The Niagara Falls Journal of August 7 has a strong open letter, replete with cogent arguments, addressed to the New York Legislature, for a repeal of the Sunday laws now on the statute-books of that state. The writer, J. W. Hodge, M.D., truly characterizes them as unjust, un-American, and unconstitutional. But these laws are not of Christian origin, as the doctor seems to intimate. True Christianity knows nothing of a union of church and state, nothing of religion enforced by civil statute, nothing of coercion in religious matters. All Sunday laws are un-christian.
