The Wail from the Lake of Fire

By Deloire Ross Buckner
O, for cool water to allay our thirst! For, in our torment, whereso'er we turn, The frantic flames our tortured bodies burn, Until our eyeballs seem about to burst, While there sits He, whom often we have cursed, His frown upon us, merciless and stern, Meanwhile He smiles on those we once did spurn. The first indeed are last, the last are first! O, moist our swollen tongues! We strangle—choke, Our plumes but adding fervor to the fire, Meanwhile our molten jewels eat to the bone. But worse than pain—remorse! For, through the smoke, With golden harps and crowns, we see the choir Of the redeemed about God's rainbow throne.
